Frogs of the genus Teloderma, or warty copepods

To the family of copepods belongs one of the most unusual genera of the Teloderma (Theloderma), in another way - warty paddles.

These tree animals are distributed in the South, East and Southeast Asia. They prefer to live in mountain and lowland rainforests. Representatives of this genus have skin covered with various tubercles. In this regard, their appearance resembles some plants, such as shrubs of moss or lichens. They have a variety of colors, which primarily serve as a disguise in those places where teloderma live.

Rough teloderma (Theloderma asperum) is the most numerous species. Not whimsical in choosing places for living and breeding. The main criterion for choosing a settlement is absolutely any type of reservoir. One male has a small harem of two to three females. The breeding season is from March to November.

Teloderma Frog (Theloderma).

Lay masonry, on average, from ten eggs above the water surface not more than fifteen centimeters, attaching eggs to the walls or arches of the hollow. Offspring becomes sexually mature at the age of seven months. This species has a small size, not exceeding four centimeters. The color on the back is dark brown with an admixture of black, on the sides with the addition of cream shades. At a young age, the colors are lighter. The eyes are large with a red rainbow. Life expectancy is about six years.

Rough teloderm is successfully kept at home. For this, it is necessary to create an environment suitable for the life of this animal. The small size of the frog allows you to place it in a small container, the bottom of which is filled with water. Shelters can serve as pieces of bark, driftwood, fallen oak leaves. Particular attention should be paid to water. It must first be insisted on oak bark or oak leaves until a brown shade is obtained, since the thermoderm is rough in nature and avoids clear water. Water temperature should not exceed 24 ° С during the day, and 18 ° С at night.

Lichen teloderma (Theloderma corticale).

Lichen teloderma (Theloderma corticale) is perhaps the most famous and beautiful species of this genus. Mossy frogs are common in Vietnam. Spend most of their lives in water. Habitats are chosen in various niches, flooded caves or destroyed hollows of trees filled with water. Reaching nine centimeters, they are one of the largest representatives of the genus teloderm. Visually, the frog resembles a bush of moss because of pimples and tubercles of green and gray-brown colors, located on the entire surface of its body. Slightly flattened elongated muzzle at the end is rounded.

An active lifestyle is preferred at night. The diet consists of insects (crickets, cockroaches, orthoptera meadow). The mating process teaches in April - May. It occurs in water, after which a female with a male on her back is selected on land for laying eggs. Eggs are attached to the stems of plants and stones, not higher than seven centimeters from the water. Large and round suction cups located at the ends of the fingers of all paws help to move and climb stones and plants perfectly. The average lifespan of teloderma lichen is six years.

Teloderm is often kept in captivity.

In captivity, they are kept in free aquariums filled with water up to eight centimeters. Because This species climbs well, the terrarium should include a lid. For the comfort of frogs, various snags, large stones, ceramic shelters, artificial and living plants can be placed in them. The temperature must be maintained from 26 ° C to 28 ° C.

The Gordon teloderma (Theloderma gordoni) inhabits the alpine forests of Vietnam and Thailand. It settles in hollows of trees, crevices and cracks. It has a small size of up to five centimeters, but a massive body. Like all teloderms, rough back skin is inherent, and the tubercles can radically differ in size. The color of this species can vary from dark yellow to red-brown. On the back, large tubercles have a dark brown hue, and in the temporal region orange. The belly is painted with a marble pattern in gray tones, and the suction cups on the fingers are grayish-white. When she is in danger, the frog turns into a dense ball and determine that this living creature is almost impossible.

Teloderm - tropical frogs.

The conditions in the terrarium are similar to those for the terraderma lamellar, only for revenge of large stones it is recommended to use pieces of oak bark. In food, she loves to feast on young American cockroaches and banana crickets.
Terloderma horrible (Theloderma horridum) is common in Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. This species is poorly understood. It is known that they live in tropical forests, hiding in a variety of shelters on trees. They have an average size not exceeding five centimeters. The membranes on the hind limbs reach almost to the suction cups, and on the front to the middle of the fingers. The skin is dark brown with black spots on the sides, covered with warts and tubercles of different sizes. The abdomen is decorated with marble in gray and black. Large and flat suction cups are painted in bright orange. Lives about six years.

The maintenance in aquatorrariums provides for the presence of a layer of water, absorbent soil or peat and the presence of several shelters.

The smooth teloderma (Theloderma licin) grows to only three centimeters. It lives only in the western regions of Miami. Based on the name, this species has smooth skin, with barely noticeable tubercles. The color of the frog varies from fawn to brownish. The sides and throat are painted with dark brown spots. The white belly dot the pattern of brown spots. The eyes are large with a bright red iris.

Staroderma (Theloderma stellatum) is a small brown frog. On the back are black and orange elongated spots. The skin on top is covered with pimples, and on the sides is almost smooth. The belly is gray with large black spots. Distributed in the tropical forests of the east of Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Leads only a tree lifestyle.

It feeds on cockroaches, crickets and spiders. Adult individuals may eat chicks of small birds and smaller relatives. At home, you will need a vertical terrarium with a lot of living vegetation. Illumination with an ultraviolet lamp does not interfere.
